How we build Rust, Spin and WebAssembly

Built for efficient and reliable business software

At IoTides Pvt. Ltd., all our products are developed using Rust. We combine this with Spin and WebAssembly to build application services that are lightweight, modular and run within controlled boundaries.

For our customers, these choices support practical goals: fewer preventable software errors, efficient use of computing resources, and clearer control over what each service can access.

The technology behind our products

Three choices that work together: a language that checks memory before the code runs, a format that runs inside a boundary, and a framework that gives each job its own component.

Rust helps us prevent memory errors

Software uses a computer's memory to hold information while it works. Mistakes in handling that memory can cause crashes or create security weaknesses.

Rust checks many of these mistakes before the software runs. Its ownership and borrowing rules help prevent problems such as using memory after it has been released. Safe Rust also helps prevent data races, where overlapping access to shared information creates unsafe behaviour.1, 2

Rust is also designed for speed and memory efficiency. This makes it a useful foundation for business services that need to process requests and manage resources carefully.1

WebAssembly provides a controlled place to run

WebAssembly, often called Wasm, is a portable format for running compiled software. It can be used on servers as well as in web browsers.3

A Wasm component runs inside a restricted environment called a sandbox. Think of it as a separate workroom with controlled doors. Access to the surrounding system goes through the interfaces provided by its host. This adds a boundary between the component and the server around it.4

Spin runs the right service for the job

Spin is a framework for building and running applications made of WebAssembly components. These components can respond to events, such as a website request or a message from another system.5

This supports an application structure in which different components handle different jobs. Permissions can define which files and outside services a component may access. For example, outgoing HTTP requests are blocked by default until the required destinations are permitted.6, 7

What this means for your business

Five practical effects of building this way, stated without overclaiming.

Fewer preventable memory problems

Rust's checks help catch many memory mistakes during development. This reduces a source of avoidable crashes and security weaknesses in the application code.2

Better use of computing resources

Rust's efficient execution and Spin's lightweight, fast-starting components can help reduce overhead for suitable workloads. Actual cloud costs depend on the application, traffic, storage, external services and hosting arrangement.1, 5

Clearer access boundaries

A service does not need access to everything simply because it belongs to the same application. With carefully configured permissions, components can be limited to the resources and connections required for their work.6, 7

Components that are easier to work on

Separating functions into focused components can make it easier to test, maintain and improve individual services. Changes still need testing wherever components work together.6

More choice in deployment

Spin supports deployment on self-hosted servers, Kubernetes and compatible hosted platforms. The chosen environment must support the application's interfaces, data services and operational needs.5, 8

A simple example

Imagine an appointment-booking service. It needs to check available slots, record a booking and send a confirmation. It does not need unrestricted access to the organisation's payroll system.

With a component-based design, these responsibilities can be separated and the required connections explicitly permitted. Rust helps protect memory handling within the code, while WebAssembly and Spin support boundaries around how the component runs and what it can reach.

This illustrates how the technologies can work together. The permissions and service connections are configured for each solution.

Booking component

  • Read the appointment calendarpermitted
  • Write the booking recordpermitted
  • Send the confirmationpermitted
  • Reach the payroll systemblocked

Outgoing requests stay blocked until a destination is explicitly allowed.

Supporting the products our customers use

Our Rust development approach supports IoTides products across AI-assisted interviews, hospital calling and appointments, CRM, financial accounting, inventory, education and business automation.

Spin and WebAssembly support modular application services within this approach. Connections to AI models, databases, telephony and other systems are designed around each product's requirements.

Security depends on the whole system

Rust, Spin and WebAssembly strengthen different parts of software design. They work alongside secure access controls, careful handling of passwords and access keys, testing, monitoring and regular updates.

Safe Rust's protections depend on correctly implemented supporting code. Unsafe operations and connections to other languages need careful review. WebAssembly isolation also depends on the runtime and the permissions granted to components.4, 9

Our reason for choosing these technologies is practical: to reduce preventable memory errors and support efficient services with clear access boundaries.
